my story
My first introduction to kinesiology came while working for a chiropractor. I noticed they used a strange activity called ‘muscle testing’ while working with patients. This fascinated me and I was full of questions about it. I couldn’t pin down exactly what it was or how it worked, so I decided to explore further and see a kinesiologist. This decision started the most incredible journey of discovery for me.
My initial expectation and understanding was very rudimentary, and started with the mindset “This is sore, can you fix it?” I quickly learned that's not what kinesiology is about. My kinesiologist would instead help me identify the stress patterns that created ‘the sore bit’, helping me better understand why it might be ‘sore’, and support me to change the environment which created those stress patterns.
“We cant solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them”- Albert Einstein.
I soon learned I was a whole lot more than my physical self. Slowly, I learned my physical health was very closely intertwined with my emotional, mental and chemical health too. For example, I’d previously assumed a headache was only physical. I soon learned the chemicals I put into my body created physical pain. I discovered MSG was a migraine trigger for me, and that when I got frustrated and angry I also got headaches. It opened my eyes to a whole new understanding of the complexities of being human.
During this time of discovery, I was able to identify and change some of the physical issues I originally sought care for. I found that by working on the stress patterns and environments leading to these issues, I could change unhelpful habits and behaviours. I could create new mindsets and ways of being that led to a greater understanding of myself and the world around me. My world was suddenly a much richer and brighter place. Wonder and curiosity now took up the space where previously there had been constant stress and dissatisfaction.
This experience and infinite curiosity lead me to study kinesiology. I wanted to quench my thirst for knowledge and understanding (I also wanted to learn how to explain muscle testing and kinesiology to people!). I had no intention of going any further than that, but after the first class I was hooked. I knew this was what I wanted to do.
After completing my first year of study I decided to commit to another two years of learning, despite finding the study extremely challenging. My curiosity and desire to learn so I could help others was greater than my fear. My kinesiology learning continues and I aim to passionately do so forever.
Life has thrown me some pretty huge curveballs since that decision, and there have been many times when I wondered if I would ever be able to follow though with it. During all of those difficult times, my desire to use this amazing modality to help other people make change in their life never waned, it only got stronger.
